Psalms 23

Psa 23:1  A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

That always confused me when I was younger. Does that mean that we shouldn't want God as  our shepherd? No. It is simply saying that God as our shepherd is all we could ever want. All we could ever need. What David is saying, is that God watches over us, that is all I want. I do not want anything else.

Psa 23:2  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures..... That means that God is leading us to the best places on earth. Notice that it didn't say that He maketh me to lie down in gray pastures, or he maketh me to lie down in dead pastures. He doesn't lead us to the worst land. He doesn't bring us to the roughest and choppiest rivers ever.

Psa 23:3  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

He restoreth my soul..... what does that mean? It means that God helps us when our faith is down. He give us strength when we are weak. One thing that caught my eye with this passage is "for his name's sake." What does that mean? I believe it means that God doesn't only do it just because he wants to help us, I think it is partially because he wants his name to be glorified. Notice that it says that the Lord leads us in the paths of RIGHTEOUSNESS. It doesn't say that he brings us to the paths of death and sin.

Psa 23:4  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

I will fear no evil. God doesn't give us the spirit of fear, but of peace and sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 God comforts us. He never leaves us. He never forsakes us. He is always with us. His rod and staff will comfort us. God is our protector, our savior.

Psa 23:5  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

IN THE PRESENCE OF MINE ENEMIES!!!  I had to point that out. God doesn't just love us. he loves our enemies as well. We ALL have enemies. Every single one of us, but if/when we go to Heaven... will we really care? We will be feasting with them in Heaven. Does God already have you and your enemies' seats planned for the feasts? Will you be sitting next to your arch enemy? There is no such thing as rivalries in Heaven. Enemies are caused by hate. Hatred is like state boundries. They are not really there. They are all in our mind, we are imagining them. Thou anointest my head with oil... Picture a cup okay? It has your name on it, and it says "so-and-so's life cup." There is a pitcher next to it called "blessings," God picks it up, and starts pouring the substance inside the "blessings" cup into your life cup. There are so many blessings that it overflows. That is how God is. He keeps giving you blessing after blessing after blessing. All you have to do, is believe in him. Now, mind you, that living for Christ isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it is sure worth it.

Psa 23:6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

God gives you mercy, he gives you goodness. What else could you want? Refer back to verse one. "I shall not want." GOODNESS!!! MERCY!!! That is all you could ever want. Name one thing you want, name one thing. A television? Computer? Iphone? Ipad? You name it. Think of that, then compare it to what God has to offer.... Doesn't seem so important anymore, does it? Eternity in Heaven? That is a WHOLE lot better than getting the Ipod 7. Don't you think?
