The Armor of God: The Waist Belt of Truth

In this series "The Armor of God" we will be talking about the spiritual defenses that we should have to help ourselves on the journey of following God. Paul says in Ephesians 6 that we don't fight against the men of the flesh, but against principles and demons who seek to destroy us. These 6 pieces of spiritual armor will help protect us from the lies and temptations of Satan and his followers. This letter was written during the age of the Romans' rule and at this time there was a lot of warring and fighting going on. There were 6 parts of a Roman Soldier's fighting attire that would help him in battle.

The first piece of armor mentioned is the waist belt of truth. Why would Paul start out with the waist belt of truth? Why doesn't he start out with the Mighty Sword of the Spirit? or maybe the powerful shield of faith. But why a belt? Let's break this name down piece by peace, the first thing we will look at is what was the belt used for in the Roman army? The belt was very important to the Romans, the belt was the piece that held the scabbard, and the scabbard is the piece that held the sword. So without the belt, he would have no weapon, and the weapon is a very, very important part of a war. The NSB says that the belt also held strips of leather to protect the lower body. The belt also secures all the other pieces of their armor. So without the belt, we would have no weapon, no way to protect the lower body, and our armor would probably slip off during battle.

Now what about the "truth" part? In this case, the word "truth" is referring to the Bible. We know that God won't lie to us so we know that whatever comes out of his mouth is the truth. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that the scripture was given by inspiration of God. That part "inspiration of God" literally means "God-Breathed." God told Paul what to write and because we already know that God wouldn't lie to us, we know that the entire Bible is true. All his commands and promises found in the Bible are true.

But what does truth have to do with a belt? A belt encompasses the waist. Are we letting only truth surround us? If we let penetrate our defenses, that will destroy the belt of truth, and without the belt of truth, all of our other armor will fall off and we will be very vulnerable. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 tells us to test everything we come across and only hold on to what is true and good. Be careful, and only let what is good and true into your heart.
